FileMaker Go

FileMaker Go was introduced in the summer of 2010 and has the potential to increase the utility of FileMaker databases beyond anything that has come before it by allowing users to access their live databases while out of the office or to take copies of their databases with them on an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch.

Even though FileMaker Go is relatively new, we already have several projects that incorporate FileMaker Go as a critical element.

Field Service Application

Our original project with this company was to assist them in managing a complex field service business wherein they conduct onsite inspections of equipment located in various locations all across the United States.  The application we designed enables them to track when service is required, who is eligible to perform the service, assist with the scheduling of the service, and track the status of the work required after the service is complete (reporting, invoicing, etc.)

With FileMaker Go, the field service personnel will now have the ability to access the FileMaker database from their iPhones while away from the office, using it in conjunction with other iPhone apps to get directions, keep up with appointments, and more.  In order to facilitate this process, we created iPhone-friendly user layouts that present the information required in concise and easy-to-use screens with buttons to open a map, make a phone call, etc.

Retail Application

After creating an application that utilized FileMaker in conjunction with barcode scanners to assist with recording sales and tracking inventory, FileMaker Go provided the next logical step -- using a Bluetooth barcode scanner in conjunction with an iPhone to enable complete mobility of sales personnel.  We have also proposed using a credit card reader with the iPhone to allow a complete point-of-sale system in the palm of your hand.

These are two projects that are currently active, but as noted previously, the potential is huge going forward and presents a significant competitive advantage to FileMaker when compared to other databases.
